This artwork is inspired by the pre-human Earth, when the elements were ruling the planet. Air as an element, as a movement of inhale and exhale that gives life, as wind of change and as the most invisible and intangible yet inseparable from creation itself.

  
The inspiration of Polina Stepanova lies in a deep fascination with hylozoism: philosophical idea of matter having a soul. Each painting is a visual translation of concepts related emergence of life on Earth, elements and primordial forces. The artist is strongly influenced by folklore and ancient belief systems. Similarly to an Alchemist or a Priestess, she seeks to transform matter into a powerful and charged object.

  
Abstract dialogue of shapes is reinforced by the technique of painting almost without touching the paper with brushes, or any other tools. This specific way of painting is developed by Polina Stepanova to allow watercolour and ink work together with gravity: dropping, travelling around the canvas. I leave the artwork to grow on its own, while the role of an artist is to bring all the elements together: orchestrating it.

  
Behind each tree that emerges from the soil and grows into an ancient being, being each of the Earth inhabitants there’s a play of elements. It us not until the water meets the earth, then the fire and air in the right proportion that the life emerges. Or, the life is the play of elements itself?
