Overview

Cirkus Kolektiv is calling for applications from artists and collectives working in contemporary circus and outdoor arts for their Outdoor Art Research Lab residency programme in Split, Croatia (March – April 2025), supported by Culture Moves Europe.

The residency programme seeks to foster outdoor exploration and creation within contemporary circus and outdoor arts. By focusing on public spaces and their specific contexts, the programme hopes to encourage a unique approach to artistic expression that is currently underrepresented in Croatia. The Outdoor Art Research Lab residency programme can foster a vibrant dialogue between artists, local communities, and the urban landscape, ultimately reimagining Split’s public spaces as places of connection and creativity.

Background: In recent years, Split has experienced a significant transformation, shifting from a primarily residential city to a thriving tourist destination. This transition has had a profound impact on both the tangible and intangible aspects of urban life. As tourism has expanded, gentrification and the homogenization of public spaces have led to a decline in their accessibility and relevance for residents. Consequently, public spaces in Split have become increasingly marginalized in the mental maps and daily lives of residents, contributing to a sense of disconnection between the community and their city.
