Overview

This hands-on course, underwritten by the Gilroy and Lillian P. Roberts Foundation in honor of Gilroy Roberts, ninth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, teaches artists how medals and coins are traditionally created. Instructed by Laura Stocklin (Jeweler, and Engraver, Bureau of Engraving and Printing), students explore the ancient art of hand die-engraving together with more modern processes currently used to create coins and medals.

Students who successfully complete the first year (June 28-July 3, 2025) will be invited back for the second year (June TBD, 2026) to continue their study of this fascinating art form (and will receive a second scholarship, as outlined above, to allow participation in 2026).

The selection committee reviews dozens of applications. They will look upon your application favorably if your essays are free of typos and grammatical errors, and if you include all and only the materials requested. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us. Applicants need not be professional artists to have their work considered.

Program Dates:

Year One: June 28-July 3, 2025 | Year Two: June TBD, 2026
