\* _FabricDrawing_ began with my exploration into the diversification of painting space. While fabrics replace paints in my work, they don’t necessarily hold a higher significance than mere material. I use fabrics to express a painting spaceratherthantoreproducethe “actofcreatingsomething” ortoembodyastory.

Through painting, I explored various spatial dimensions and expanded my bounds of expression from planar space to architectural space. Facing the moments that imprint in me, whether special or ordinary, I take those momentary emotions and capture my experience-based interpretation and impression in my work.

Fabric can be manipulated into limitless forms: tightened or loosen, tied or untied through knots, or patterned. Variations in texture, thickness, or elasticity show different personalities and emotions. Colored fabrics can be stretched to become thin to the point they appear translucent. Overlapping fabrics of different colors with stretched and translucent fabric creates a new harmony with a mixture of colors, textures, or both.

What I intend to achieve here is to reveal the relationships between what is already visible to the eyes and what has yet tobeseen.Toexplainsuchanabstractideawithmyownwords,Iwouldsay, “Nevertheless,intheend,thereexists us, forming relationships in a harmony.”

Layers of fabric are more powerful than a single layer of fabric. Similarly, rather than existing on their own, colors stand in a balance of or contrast with other colors to have a meaning. Fabrics that have been spread, stretched, hung, and overlapped to create a new screen, build stronger and sturdier layers that provide a foundation and impetus for each other, just like in our life.

In its literal sense, it is a painting technique that uses fabric as a tool. Painting, in a general sense, is defined by lines. In modern painting, however, the definition of such genres has blurred and become meaningless. In my work, a fabric replaces a brush and leaves lines behind on a canvas. Using fabric as a means to create lines, my work embodies planes and space. In the same sense as diversifying the painting space, I believe fabric drawing is also a spatial painting in a broader scope.

**Fabric Drawing for Chopin#154** 

I named my work Fabric Drawing. It is literally a painting that is a drawing with fabric. As a lover of classical music, making this drawing was a labour of love. I worked while listening to Chopin’s Nocturne Op.9:3 and Piano Concerto No 2, Op 21\. The inspiration from his work was translated in the texture and the colour of the fabric. Just as layered pieces of sound create beautiful harmony, so does my work. To remind me of his music, I engraved the name of his song in my work. I hope you can feel Chopin’s beautiful melody in the work. “As if I remember happy memories under the beautiful moonlight of a spring day...”

Daun Jeong – ‘Painting’ in 3D -**Author: Frank van der Ploeg**

 A painting as a window onto the world. In the tradition of realistic painting, an object made of canvas/panel and paint, and surrounded by a lovely frame, may ‘act as if it is so’. And so one can acquire the unattainable. In the tradition of art history, there was a lengthy evolution in which representation moved to abstraction, the frame disappeared and the object was allowed to be what it was. Daun Jeong’s textile objects fit into this same trajectory, and surpass the painting arts.

 Jeong Daun is an artist who does 'space-drawing' mainly using fabric. Majoring in Western painting, instead paint and canvas, she selected fabric and space to break the traditional notion of painting. By pulling several layers of fabric and overlapping them on a canvas frame , she creates cracks in planarity inherent in painting, and thereby turns visual area into not imaginary but real space. And the artist now begins to focus on the space itself beyond the boundary between 2D and 3D.

Jeong displays an installation making use of four poles which were made for her works. the pole measuring 6M high supports the space. She wraps the pole with green fabrics, inspired by a magnificent forest. And on the sides of the space, mirrors were installed on the floor so that the audiences could see their identity in the forest, and Korean traditional hanbok textile, which can be reminiscent of wind in the forest, were hung from the ceiling to feel the touch.

Turn of Sense

Pieces of slit cloth stand for Jeong's brushstrokes. The two dimension of drawing is extended to the three dimension through factors in her works such as translucency arising when cloth stretches and the space between the canvas frame and layered fabric. Space in her work is filled with fabrics that move beyond the edge of a canvas or are set directly in space. The audience is able to experience a material property's harmony with three-dimensional space molded by the fabric's two-dimensional surface encountering another plane.

Jeong displays an installation making use of one of the six poles of the Museum

SAN building. The pole measuring 10.8 meters high supports the museum's roof. An exposed concrete pillar linking the first floor to the second floor feels massive and authoritative. She wraps the pole with canvas on which some images are drawn with fabrics of multifarious colors, inspired by spring and summer. The exposed concrete pillar interrupting the views of the audiences inside and outside is reborn into a medium to bring the season outside the windows inside.
