“Konsum” is an interactive object with its own situational soundtrack. It reacts to the distance to people, their speed of approach and their approximate number. Heart rate, breathing, core color, but also the advertising intensity of the displays adapt to the environment. The object, stuffed full of plastic, is held together by cable ties, old screws, adhesive tape and perforated tape. A makeshift and patchwork, like our societies and systems.

Until we have everything we want and are still unhappy. The consumer apparatus sets the priorities and dictates what we need. Because they don’t know what they want.

No peace.

Entertainment junkie. Addict in an advanced stage. Neglect of the inner world of feelings and thoughts. Alone with oneself, without narcotic distraction, a horror.

The crying baby gets the breast, the consumer trivial entertainment (tittytainment) to keep him happy.

Anti-Void – No peace

Other things are more important now, appearances have priority for now. No time. What remains is the baby, the child and some black box. Apparatuses take over parenting according to unknown priorities. Many shifts accumulate into distortions that disfigure everything. Cripples.

Blackbox Baby

Unlimited growth, a dogma that is firmly rooted in our minds. The supposed guarantor of prosperity and the sure path to barbarism. Meaningless products, which have only a symbolic character and serve the purpose of prestige and demarcation, are produced exponentially. Not sustainable in the long term in a limited system. But exponential growth can actually be found in nature. Bacteria and tumors grow exponentially due to degenerative or pathological processes. They eventually come to a standstill due to the destruction of their own basis of life and thus fail due to their own dynamics. Limitless growth opens its mouth wider and wider and pushes us further and further to the edge of our existence.

Grenzenloses Wachstum / Unlimited Growth

The interactive installation “CO2” is my first attempt to make carbon dioxide (CO2) tangible on an audiovisual level. For me, carbon dioxide feels black, cold and pointy. You can easily injure yourself on its constantly protruding corners. The large amount of carbon dioxide obscures everything beautiful and suffocates.

Each triangle is connected to one of two sounds and plays this in a loop and in a random frequency range. The area of the triangle or the carbon dioxide determines the respective volume of the emitted sound.

When the viewer steps in front of the installation, the first carbon dioxide triangles appear after a short time. A few carbon dioxide parts appear completely harmless, sometimes interesting. But the longer the viewer stands in front of the screen, the more carbon dioxide is produced. Interferences, disharmonies and distortions occur in the sound, but also in real life.

Unfinished, improvised, flawed, not thought through to the end. Why strive for an end at all? A few preconceived A-ways were the trigger for this object, but perfection would be a contradiction in terms with this apparatus. The device can be used, or should I say served, without further instruction.

Occasionally, “B-Ways” is a metaphor for life. An apparatus of knowledge.

 We can never determine or predict our life path 100%. We can only prepare and create conditions that favor events that we desire.

 But perhaps it is the paths we are not prepared for that ultimately bring us the most, the B-paths or even C-, D- or E-paths. In most cases, a different path goes hand in hand with a change of perspective. We gain new insights and discover unexpected possibilities, in our environment, but also in ourselves. We develop ourselves further.

With this interactive abstract art apparatus / object, we never know exactly what direction the virtual character on the screen will take next. We never know where life will take us. We’re always just in the neighborhood of….

 The virtual character never comes to a stop. Life has no pause button.

 We can act, but in doing so we are always just reacting and making the best of what is there at the moment.

 We can look at what fits best for us and how it fits into the overall picture. Sometimes this works well, sometimes not at all. And yet, an interesting overall picture often emerges.

But maybe this interactive abstract media object is just a way to paint with a toaster, a horn and a dial.

B-Ways

In 1950, ethologist John Calhoun conducted experiments on the effects of overpopulation on the behavior of social animals (mice). All the mice ended up dead, no matter how many times Calhoun repeated the experiment.

What has me thinking is the similarities of Phase C of the experiments with our current world situation:

* Collapse of gender roles
* Social withdrawal

Could total societal collapse mean the end of us?

 Or can pandemics and wars shield us from it?

Time Capsule

The Schwerlichtkrümmer is a heavy light curvature refractor from the heavy light torque decelerator family. Colloquially it is referred to by humans as Schwerlichtkrümmer. The exact purpose is not yet known. However, initial indications point to a medical background. The Schwerlichtkrümmer and the light generated with it could have been used to heal depressed people (the proportion of depressed people on earth was 63% in the 2200s).

The Schwerlichtkrümmer “Torina van 0D0” is a one-off handcraft. Torina van 0D0 designed and built it probably in the years after 2244, the so-called “dark decade”.

 At that time, an experiment to artificially darken the earth’s atmosphere got out of control and darkened various atmospheric layers for decades. Such darkening had to be carried out again and again in order to reduce the warming of the earth, locally and at least temporarily.

Schwerlichtkrümmer – Torina van 0D0

Flawless appearance. Material center. Rescue from the calm. Media overload. So that the continuous loop is easy to endure and remains unrecognized. Shrinkage and retreat. The body, carrier to toilet and fridge.
