Galaxy Orchestra is an interactive projection installation. Visitors immerse themselves into the space to create fields and star trails, which later transform into nebulas and stardust.
  
  
The installation, in response of the traditional Chinese concept 'walk to measure the sky', allows visitors to create lasting star trails using their own walking paths. The glowing stars the visitors created themselves are transformed into real space photographs of the Rose Nebula and the Helix nebula afterwards.

「墨・迹」「Ink・Fall」is a digital installation of ink painting of waterfall. From ancient times, China has a traditional of using ink to draw waterfall paintings. And the core concept of [山水画](mountain and water paintings) is never about accuracy or beauty of a moment. It is about the flowing atmosphere that make Chinese paintings unique. This installation, uses thousands of lines and hundreds of thousands of ink particles, to paint ink paintings on screen. 

 Though expression methods have also changed dramatically in this digital age, what I want to show and communicate is almost the same as the ancient artists do in this piece. When fingers touch the painting(screen), ink streams will be separated by fingers, particles are also blasted, but the flow of ink continues. At the same time, the sound of koto rises and fused into the background music of birds and water flows harmoniously.

Ink Fall

Flux is a sound-to-space-synaesthesia installation. 

 Analyzing sound from real world with the help of a 7-channel microphone array and sound localization algorithms, Flux turns real sound sources into an ever-changing virtual space. Sound sources in physical world, serving as gelatinous flow and impulses, continuously altering the form of the virtual space. By combining the spectrum and localization of each sound source, the virtual space becomes a giant fluid field that encloses and transforms the sound scape into space dimension. 

 The immersive VR environment is the most suitable medium for this experiment because it deprives visual access to real world - "isolation" in VR world - while keeps the sound option open, which leaves enormous space for imagination for a virtual world - "reconnect" via audio. Flux is utilizing the VR setup and gives its audience the imaginative space derived by sound scape.

This 360 video is generated from the actual sound recorded at Liverpool street in London, UK. The black circles are the sound source directions detected, ink strokes are the spectrums and flow generated from each sound sources.

Flux

Cosmos creates pixels in space by reflecting light source from caustic surfaces. Spatially placed caustic surfaces and half-mirrors, along with a gently moving light source, formed this light sculpture. Computationally designed and 3d-printed, caustic surfaces are being coated with reflective materials where, each facet is in representation of a star. With the movement of the light source, the cosmos will have its shape altered too. Above the caustic surfaces, 12 half-mirror pieces, placed in a nebula shape, reflects facets into space - viewers will see different faces of the surface from different angles.

COSMOS

Hundres of golden fishes are swimming resetlessly in the pond, leaving their traces diffused into ink strokes, combing with golden scales left behind time to time, a ever-changing ink painting is being generated.   In the beginning, most of the graphics is hidden behind projection, only few fishes are wandering in the central canvas. 

When visitors are attracted by the fishes and finally touching the canvas, fishes will react to respond, jump beyond the boundary of the canvas, and leading the ink to cover the whole wall. When released from canvas, fishes will swim more freely and interact with visitors: when visitors stand still, fishes will swim towards them – as if they are waiting to be fed; when visitors move around, they will however escape fast – as if they are frightened by the disturbulance of water. 

All graphic elements in this piece is generated through procedural programming, fishes and ink traces create an automation system. And visitors, as they interact, become part of this system too - the interaction contributes to the content of the ink painting. The work, by emphasizng on the difference between the limited canvas and boundless projection, asorbs visitors into this ever-changing ink painting system.

Golden Scale, Ink Pond

This new version of Inkfall'19, is trying to incorporate more elements, and build a complete interactive system - the interaction with the waterfall generates ink drops, interaction with ink drops made butterflies, ink drops grows into flowers when hitting the rocks, ink drops turn into gold fishes when hitting water surface - and finally, the continuous stimulation to the environment awakes the dragon.

Ink Fall 2019

相/Phase is generative data art piece. It takes equations from the Wolfram physics project to generate cluster of universes and split the visual in Chinese ink painting - observational and geometrical line - structural views. Its core concept lies in blending Chinese Daoism with scientific hypothesis into a generative visual system.
